Here in Chicago, Mayor Daley has been railing against the news media for overhyping snow and winter and weather the city gets every single year but always seems surprised by (to be fair, if you have to go outside today and wait for a bus or train, -12 degree windchill will make you want to kill someone, if only you could move your arms. I work from home, so you all get to live.)

Anyway, apparently last year NBC called an impending blizzard “Snowpocalypse 08”. It was tongue-in-cheek but I think some people actually freaked out. Well this week we were predicted to get anywhere from 1 inch to 3 feet of snow (we got MAYBE 2 inches, if it blew into a pile somewhere) but that didn’t stop NBC from declaring SNOWMAGEDDON 09 and creating what is my favorite weather-related local news affiliate animation ever.

It is 1 degree F outside. Wind chill is -12F.

When the previous tenants of my apartment moved out, they left behind several goodies, including: 1) A “rabbit” wine bottle opener of very high quality, 2) An entire sushi set including wooden blocks, nice chopsticks and all the dainty little plates and such, 3) A seasoned cast-iron skillet and 4) a meat thermometer.

Since moving in I haven’t used the sushi set, but the rabbit and the skillet get used all the time. I use that skillet on a daily basis. I never really paid attention to the meat thermometer until I realized that I regularly screw up red meat. I’m a champion of poultry, but beef? It was so hit or miss, and the misses were expensive and unfortunate.

I finally tried out Mr. Meat Thermometer (its really a male, don’t you think?) and oh my goodness, how someone who loves to cook as much as me hadn’t thought to use one of these ingenious little devices yet is BEYOND ME. Perfect meat, every time.

/This post was perhaps the most Captain Obvious of anything I’ve ever posted, but I really don’t care, because my tri-tip tonight was outstanding and you’re just jealous you didn’t have any.

Hey look, it snowed.

I woke up to a white wonderland this morning, and though many of my neighbors turned the air cloudy with the fog of their collective heavy, resigned sighs, I was excited. I lived in sunny, awful* Southern California for 7 years, and so it feels good to once again be in a place with winters and springs. And autumn, which was just a few days ago. Seriously, it was only a couple weeks ago I was biking for 20+ miles along the lakefront, and now I am taking my dog for walks in snow.

Later, I went for a 4.6 mile run on the snowy and salty sidewalks. I don’t want to stay inside all winter. I want to be outside. Heck, I probably NEED to be outside. I don’t want to get S.A.D. this year because I have too much to be H.A.P.P.Y. about.

Anyway so there’s a picture of my office window view, and there’s another picture of my dog’s butt as she takes her very! first! walk! ever! in the snow. And her name is Snowy. Snowy in the snow. Its so meta.

*my opinion only reflects my attitude with the way the state is run, the impossibility of the cost of living there, and the smog. This opinion has nothing to do with the gorgeous coastline or In-N-Out burger.
